I have to admit, I’ve been pleasantly surprised at watching Bus Jumper take off on the Amazon appstore. As I’ve mentioned earlier, the release of the Kindle Fire provided a big boost in my Amazon downloads over Christmas. I was half expecting things to die down to earlier levels after some time. Well, it’s been a month, and while the initial spike is gone, things seem to have settled down to a pretty decent state.
This is something I’ve been thinking about lately. I’ve built a procedural level generator for Neil Rajah (some details starting here), and right now, this is handling all of the level creation, I’m not adding anything by hand. This means I can crank out an endless number of levels if I want to, keep updating the game with more content forever. Of course, I’m not going to do that, because the game will become pretty boring after a while. But that’s not what this post is about.

A few days ago, I was contacted by Jay Van Buiten. He’s written a book on Android marketing called “Genius Android Marketing: Get Rich by Outsmarting the Android Market”, and wanted to know if I was interested in promoting it on my blog (the link takes you to Amazon). At first, I was a little taken aback. This is the first time anyone has approached me with something like this (not counting the one time someone asked me to run ads for leather handbags), and I wasn’t quite sure how to react. My wife pointed out that the FTC has disclosure requirements for blogs. So I did some reading, and exchanged some emails with Jay. He seemed legit, and I believe the FTC won’t come after me if I state that he gave me a copy of his book to review. Still, I wasn’t too sure about this, so I said I’d take a few days to think it over, and read the book.
I guess I could call this an ‘infographic’ post, although I’m just sharing one chart. Here’s the weekly breakdown of new users for Bus Jumper:
During the week of Christmas, I got almost 10% of my total new users. In 1 week. The game has been out for about 8.5 months, which means on average I get about 12% new users per month. Just the week of Christmas was better than some full months during the summer.
If I include the week leading up to Christmas, the numbers get even more dramatic. Those 2 weeks account for 16.3% of new users. That’s more than any other. It’s more than August and September combined.
I know what this means – my Mobclix revenue is going to drop to pre-holiday levels pretty quickly
